Views of a hotel along a road in what is likely Mountain House, California in eastern Alameda County. Two of the views are
group portraits taken in front of the hotel at approximately the same point in time, each of the groups including a possible
mixture of tourists, staff, Native Americans, local residents, etc. The other view appears to be earlier, does not include
people, and is taken from a different vantage point, showing the hotel and additional structures along the road and a hilly
background with trees.

Prints nos. 1 and 2 include hand-written captions on the backs of their mounts: 1) Gathering of mountain folk at Mt. House.
Note the local Indians at left of picture. The characters we knowow [sic] as Digger Indians, a northern California breed noted
for their laziness, their one good quality, they were harmless & peaceful; 2) Another group at Mt. House including the Indians.
I am unable to identify any of the hill billies. However I was around at the time this picture was taken.

During the Gold Rush era, Mountain House was a popular way station between San Francisco and California's gold country. Later,
the waystop served travelers going to and from the Bay Area and Stockton. After being acquired by Simon Zimmerman the stop
was often referred to as Zimmerman's.
